In the gut mucosa of adult subjects the mucin-acetylation decreases, and a clearly differentiated colon mucosa is seen. In the stomach mucosa this activity is increased in the chief and oxyntic cells, and in the colon mucosa it is increased in the absorptive cells. In the newborn and infant the acetylation of the glycoprotein mucin is lower in all cells, and is generally absent from goblet cells. Cells in the luminal surface of the mucosa were labeled with the N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase-glucuronyl transferase activity. Strips of small bowel, colon and stomach mucosa were taken from newborn infants, infants and adults and were fixed in air or after aldehyde perfusion.
